The current complexity of the healthcare environment in the United States requires clinical professionals to have the highest level of clinical and research expertise possible to support quality patient outcomes. Toward that end, in 2006, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) endorsed the opinion that by 2015, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) would be designated as the terminal degree for licensed nurses. Nationwide, colleges and universities with nursing programs developed DNP degrees that have seen the number of students enrolled in those programs increase from 14,688 to 18,352. During that same period, the number of DNP graduates increased from 2,443 to 3,065 (American Association of Colleges of Nurses, June, 2015).
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 34% employment increase for advanced degree nurses, such as nurse practitioners, between 2012-2022 with a median salary range of $96,940 annually. As cited by AACN, a 2011 salary survey conducted by ADVANCE for Nurse Practitioners magazine, DNP-prepared nurse practitioners earned $8,576 more than master's prepared NPs, bringing DNP estimated salaries to $105,516.
To meet the demand for DNP degrees, more than 264 DNP degrees, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited programs, have been developed at nursing schools nationwide, with more in the planning stages. Many of these accredited programs are offered online and allow currently employed, licensed nurses to obtain an advance degree while maintaining their employment. Some schools additionally offer a variety of program options which include licensed RN to DNP, BSN to DNP and MSN to DNP accelerated degrees. The number of credit hours will be dependent on your current degree status.
As part of the nationwide effort to attract more nurses to advanced nursing degrees, the National Health Service Corps of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (National Health Service Corps) offers scholarships and loans for qualified students. Qualified students may also be eligible for either workplace tuition assistance or Federal Student Financial Aid. Check with your Human Resources department for tuition assistance from your employer or talk with the school's Financial Aid Office or Admissions Office to see if you may qualify for scholarships or loans. Veterans and active military may also want to investigate tuition discounts offered to military personnel.
Because of state regulations, some schools are unable to accept students from certain states and it's important to verify you'll qualify for licensure based on your state of residence and that the degree will meet all standards for your particular state requirements.
(NOTE: There is a difference between degrees in PhD in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. The PhD is a course of study in research with employment opportunities as a nurse scientist and/or nursing faculty. The Doctor of Nursing Practice concentrates on the clinical practice of nursing and provides employment opportunities in nursing administration and/or clinical nursing faculty.)
