It seems healthcare is always in the news. No wonder, it's big business in the U.S., with over $3 trillion spent in 2017 and projections double that figure by 2027 (U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). In 2017, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation published a report that showed over 13,000,000 Americans were working in a healthcare field; and, not all careers in healthcare are clinical.
Administrators and managers are the liaisons between clinical services, state and federal regulations, insurance companies, and healthcare facilities financial stability. In 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported there were 352,200 administrators and managers and expect this number to rise dramatically in the future. Colleges and universities are beginning to offer online degree programs to meet the need for healthcare administration and management professionals.
30 Best Value Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) Online Programs
The Bureau of Labor Statistics considers Healthcare Administration one of the fastest growing careers at a much faster than average 20% between 2016-2026. While those with a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration can undoubtedly enter the field, the trend is toward employers seeking those with a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree. Employment for masters prepared professionals may be found in hospitals, healthcare systems, long-term care facilities, physician offices, or any facility that provides healthcare services. PayScale reports a salary range between $39,393-$102,550 and the BLS reports median salaries of $99,730 in May 2018.
Methodology
Best Medical Degrees has reviewed and ranked online Masters programs in Healthcare Administration or Healthcare Manager programs which are offered either 100% online or are blended programs (requiring a minimum of on-campus attendance). While not exhaustive, we looked at the following criteria in identifying schools for this list: 1) whether the program holds accreditation from either the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) or other Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, i.e., the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), etc.; 2) how long the program takes to complete by credit hours; 3) what national rankings the program or school may hold from U.S. News and World Report, Forbes, The Kiplinger Report, Washington Monthly "Best Bang for the Buck", etc.; 4) tuition costs as found on university/college websites and/or data provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Tuition estimates don't include student fees or other ancillary charges, and 5) whether the program is 100% online or a blended program (requiring a minimum of on-campus immersions or intensives.) For simplicity, programs are ranked by tuition costs.
Students should also consider whether the program can admit students from your state. Most schools participate in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement SARA. To save time, verify with the school's admission advisor if the school can admit students from your state before creating an application.
