Changes are coming for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNAs). In 2007, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (COA) recommended students entering a CRNA program after 2022 be required to earn a doctoral degree for certification. Students holding a MSN in anesthesia will be able to continue to practice after 2022, but employers will begin giving preference to DNAP or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) candidates. Schools of Nursing are offering doctoral programs for entry-level CRNAs and currently certified CRNAs wanting to obtain a doctorate.

Nursing anesthesia is a direct patient care specialty which requires hands-on simulation labs, clinical experiences and/or practicum experiences.
