According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), more than 20% of Americans live with some sort of mental or mood disorder. Just as there are many types of mental disorders, so are there many types of mental health professionals especially trained to recognize, counsel and treat those patients. Mental Health Counselors work in a variety of areas ranging from rehabilitation centers, churches, schools and universities, businesses and community service organizations. Mental health counselors are trained to diagnose emotional disorders and work with clients on treatment, often in coordination with psychiatrists or social workers on proper care.
Health insurance companies are increasingly moving patients towards the more affordable, trained mental health counselor as a cost-effective alternative to the therapy rates of psychiatrists and psychologists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the employment growth for mental health counselors will be around 28.5% between 2012-2022. US News and World Report projects median salary earnings of $40,580 with the highest paid at $67,020 annually.
Individual states have specific requirements for licensure of mental health counselors and you should verify the requirements for your state before deciding on an accredited graduate program. Some schools are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the majority of programs require a minimum of 60 credit hours, with additional hours in an internship or practicum, for completion of a degree. Be certain to verify with the school their policy on completing your internship and/or practicum in your local community.
