The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) issued a position paper recommending that the Occupational Therapy (OT) profession should transition to a doctoral degree as the preferred professional degree. The association suggest 2025 as the implementation date for this change. This is not currently required, but it's indicative of the changes coming to the OT field. Currently working OTs may want to consider advancing their education to position themselves for broader career opportunities as advanced practice therapists, researcher, or as educators of OT students.

Best Value Online Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) Programs
There are several online opportunities for currently working OT professionals who want to expand their career options. These programs provide online coursework that can typically completed in two year or less. Programs may be offered completely online or require a minimum of on-campus attendance and may include practical experiences (depending on the specialty track chosen). Programs are available for Master's of Science in Occupational Therapy (MOT) or through bridge programs for Bachlor's prepared students. Between 2016-2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates the job opportunities for Occupational Therapists at 27% which is must faster than average. The average salary for a masters prepared OT, as reported by the BLS in 2017, was $83,200 annually. PayScale estimates the averages salary for those holding a doctorate degree at $90,602 annually. Employment for OTDs may be found in hospitals, outpatient care facilities, rehabilitation centers, public schools, etc.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-M) has an online post-professional OTD program which may be completed in 3 years of part-time study. Applicants must hold a current state OT license, NBCOT certification, a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours past the Bachelor's degree (this is typically through a Master's of Occupational Therapy (MOT) progrm), etc. Students in the final year of a MOT program may apply but admission is determined by the student completing fieldwork, NBCOT certification and obtaining a state OT license.
